Some more assorted nonsense + I was wrong about the grumpy

Lisa mentioned on Facebook that she made ricotta cookies and posted a picture. I thought "Hey I'm Italian and I never heard of those. I have to find a recipe and try them". So this is the recipe I used. Total bleech - I tried one, my husband tried two - dumped the entire unholy mess into the trash. That's 2 hours of my life I won't get back - I could have been making lemon bars or double chocolate cookies BUT

I'm very careful when I bake (unlike when I cook and just throw things in a pot) and having a timer is very important - especially for me because I get distracted (ohhh, loook - shiny). I had one from the dollar store but it went missing somewhere - it was magnetized and on the side of the fridge - now who knows where the hell it is. Anyway, see that timer on the right? It's a genuine mid-century Mirro aluminum timer. I got it in this funky little store in the neighborhood that sells all kinds of stuff from the 40's and 50's. This little puppy cost $8 and came in the original box. Now I don't give a rat's ass about collectibles, art is one thing but household items are functional or they're not in my household, so the box got put in the trash (oh, do I hear groans out there? Get over it - some of us don't care. Send me your name and address and I'll leave the thing to you in my will). When I went looking for a picture on the web to use for this post I discovered people are selling these, without the original box, for $30 and up. All I know is it works really well.

Frankie is still making me crazy with her demands to use the computer and watch her bird video. When that isn't playing then she sits next to me on the desk or if she gets bored, lies on my hand. Jennifer mentioned in a comment on yesterday's post that she liked the image of Frankie napping on my hand - so that picture is for her. (You can catch some of the conversation my husband and I had about Frankie and the computer here)

And last, but not least, let's get to the grumpy. I do all my shopping on-line. So when I send someone a gift it is sent directly from the retailer. I track the progress of the package to make sure it gets delivered promptly and to the right place. I just went through a big convoluted mess recently with a gift I had sent to my brother - days of going around and around with UPS and USPS - last I know the package never got delivered and the company I purchased it from gave me back my money. So far this month I have tracked the delivery of 3 gifts to people and not a one has acknowledged receipt. So do I assume that "left at the front door" and "left with man at front door" means they got the package? Would a quick little email just to say "The package arrived" kill them? I sent the gifts because I wanted to - but I also want to know that they received them. Am I wrong here? Am I expecting too much? I need to know if I am being unreasonable, because if I am not then this is all I have to say...

As always, all the links should open in a new window/tab

  1. No you have every right to know if your packages made it to their intended destinations. Tracking is a good thing and letting us know they were delivered is even better.

I don't care about collectables either, or the box they came in. So I didn't gasp when you tossed the box. I'd have done the same.

I was married to a Sicilian way back when. Not a good ending, but his grandma (God rest that wonderful woman's soul) baked Italian cookies every year for Christmas baskets. I mean tons and tons of cookies. When she got older and couldn't handle doing it anymore I'd go after work and do what she told me and she would put them in the baskets. I love that old woman, but those cookies were awful. Hard a rocks and I lost weight helping her. I'll take your lemon bars and the chocolate anytime.

    Have a terrific day. :)

  2. My mother was a great baker, couldn't cook tho. She never ever made these - they are tasteless and kinda gummy, not nice at all. I'm half Sicilian and half Neapolitan and honey, I would never even date a Southern Italian! Thanks for letting me know I'm not being unreasonable...even my laid back "What me worry" husband agrees with me. I'm not even looking for a thank you...just want to know if it got to the right people.

No you are not being unreasonable. You aren't asking for eternal gratitude, loads of thanks and praise just the simple courtesy of saying I got your gift. I had the same thing happen to me several years ago and it soured my thrill of gift giving. The very least a person could do when you send them a gift is acknowledge it. I don't care if they say what the hell is this supposed to be so long as they let me know they got the darn thing.

That's too bad that the cookies didn't turn out. I'd prefer your lemon bars over pretty much anything! I'm hooked on those!

I'm not into vintage things so I didn't mind you throwing out the box. :) (I just have to point out that as I type this that elf's butt is shaking up a storm!)

Miss Frankie is so cute resting against your hand. Does she ever come snuggle with you while you're still in bed? Our cats lay on us all night long!

Your packages should certainly be acknowledged. It's common courtesy to let you know they arrived safely. I hope you hear something soon!

  5. Exactly right! I don't need the thank you - I do need to know they got the damn package LOL

  6. Frankie usually hangs out in our bed in the evening and then when we come up she does this rolling around meowing thing to get petted (Frankie loves being petted even more than she loves the computer). Once my husband gets into bed she snuggles up behind his knees and sleeps there all night. When I get into bed, hours later, she gets up and lays half of herself across my chest and yeowls to be petted - eventually she goes back to sleeping on my husbands legs...if he isn't up by 5 am she will nudge him to get up - breakfast time. BUT here is a huge but - when my husband is away Frankie does not wake me for breakfast...matter of fact she won't eat breakfast for me at all. It's like she's saying "Sorry, you're late.." I don't care, it's no skin off my nose if she won't eat - just means more for BB - he is the most laid back, amenable cat in the universe!

And yes, the lemon bars are so good, aren't they? My husband requested thenmas the Thanksgiving day dessert but for Christmas we are having chocolate cake with cream cheese frosting - his other favorite dessert!

I don't expect to hear about the packages - so be it.

No, you are not at all in the wrong for wanting to know if they got their present. It would be the same with any package sent, to me, and since that makes me sound a little too much like you, I'll be trying to crawl under the bed now. Hey, I've lost around 70 pounds! So,...

  8. Okaaayyy - why crawl under the bed? Congrats on losing the weight - Good job!

I love the timer. I have a thing for vintage stuff that works (though I admit, I have several timers and they are all digital ... ).

Frankie is so cute resting there on your hand, which must keep your hand nice and warm. There are times when I am on the laptop that I have a cat behind me and a cat beside me, keeping me toasty, though I think they curse the laptop because it takes up the biggest piece of human real estate available at that moment! (And thanks for the shout-out.)

Acknowledging a package receipt is the right thing to do. Especially if a wiggly elf will moon you if you don't acknowledge. ;-)

First of all....I LOVE the timer!! Secondly, what is up with people that cannot bother to let you know/thank you.... that they received a gift? That has happened to me a few times, can they not pick up the phone, or send a quick email to let you know?? I personally think it is rude...AND makes me think twice about sending a gift the next time!

  12. They still make timers that look this but we just happened to be in the store and they just happened to have this and lord know the price was right - the only thing "vintage" that I would have an interest in would be wine. I tend to the very modern, I like new!

Frankie and the computer is becoming a real problem - as soon as she hears me sit down at my desk she's in here in a flash...I did get a cute picture of her last night - she had her paw on my hand as I was trying to move the mouse - very funny - but annoying.

    That's my bah-humbug elf - didn't think I would get to use this year - haven't been in a bah-humbug mood!

  13. He's cute, yeah?

  14. Me too - you just turn it to the time needed and voila! It sure ticks loudly tho. It does the job...well. I'll probably continue to send gifts but I'll try to gear down my expectations...I can't change anyone but me!

Mmmm, chocolate cake with cream cheese frosting! I think I'd get along real well with your husband!

That's funny that Frankie doesn't wake you at 5am to be fed when your husband is gone. It's cute that she's so vocal to get you to pet her. Angel is only vocal to get treats! Isabella sleeps on my husband all night long and Angel sleeps under the covers next to me. I love to feel her soft fur against me. What would we do without our kitties? :)

  16. Frankie is a chatty catty..she talks non-stop all day long! My first cat, a Siamese named Max used to sleep under the covers with his head on the pillow next to me...

I will email you the chocolate cake recipe...so rich and easy to make. The batter is like chocolate pudding...
